Women in India don’t want ‘safe zones’ – they want to enjoy public spaces as equals | Nilanjana Bhowmick

Segregation does not make going outside any safer or more comfortable for women – it only reinforces the idea that the public sphere belongs to men

A couple of weeks ago, I was in an upmarket neighbourhood in Delhi for a photoshoot. The sun was already unforgiving, and only a handful of walkers and joggers had dared to step out in the heat. A few children, on their summer break from school, gave curious glances in our direction, but they quickly lost interest and returned to their games. Women walking by offered quick looks, but the men stared – every single one who passed us.

Then one went a step further. Mid-shoot, he walked straight up and interrupted us. At first, we smiled – out of habit, out of conditioning – thinking that he would leave. But he didn’t. Thicker bread and thicker waistlines | brief letters

ICYMI: What happened to thin-sliced bread? | Canadian celebrations | Prolix phrases | The sound of bagpipes | Rod Stewart

But the government won’t admit it, 30 June), has anyone else noticed that slices of bread are now much thicker than they used to be? And that thin-sliced bread is rarely available? I weigh my food to check weight gain, and a sandwich now uses 30% more bread. So companies have grown their sales (and profits) by 30% while increasing obesity.

• I was charmed to see the first three birthdays in your list in the paper on 1 July, Canada Day: Pamela Anderson, Dan Aykroyd and Geneviève Bujold, all Canadian. Then I realised that it was alphabetical. How very amusing of the birthday fates. And happy 158th birthday to Canada too.
