Peter Pal Jola of Kitchener, Ont., was arrested in Ethiopia in March and charged with the “importation of military equipment” for having walkie-talkies he bought on Amazon. His daughter says he wanted to help people losing touch with friends and family, and he had “no clue” that carrying walkie-talkies into the country was illegal.
