Chinese hackers infiltrated plane, train and water systems for five years, US says

ICYMI: A group known as Volt Typhoon, geared toward sabotage, quietly burrowed into critical US infrastructure networks

An advanced group of Chinese hackers taking aim at critical US infrastructure has been active for as long as half a decade, American and allied intelligence agencies said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

The US National Security Agency, US cyber watchdog CISA, the FBI and the Transportation Security Administration said that the group known as Volt Typhoon had quietly burrowed into the networks of aviation, rail, mass transit, highway, maritime, pipeline, water and sewage organizations. A race against time – and weather – in Canada shipwreck mystery

It’s up to 300 locals in the north Atlantic town of Cape Ray to recover a shipwreck that appeared last month

Freezing waves crashed into Shawn Bath and Trevor Croft as they braved the unforgiving swells of the north Atlantic. Snow fell gently as the pair of local residents took turns with a hacksaw: one cutting through the planks of a centuries-old shipwreck while the other kept a close watch on the cresting breakers.

“Each wave lifts you up and can toss you around. And the ship is full of copper, brass and wood spikes sticking up everywhere, so there’s potential for injury,” said Bath, a former urchin diver who, with Croft, runs a local marine cleanup project. “But it’s just super exciting to be a part of the whole thing.” Continue reading…

During the first week of February two storms hit California in quick succession, both featuring intense precipitation thanks to the “pineapple express” atmospheric river.

Atmospheric rivers are long narrow channels of very moist air that flow through the atmosphere, transporting impressive amounts of water vapour that eventually fall as heavy rain or snow. The pineapple express is a famous recurring atmospheric river that forms near the Hawaiian Islands and flows northe-east to the Pacific coast of North America. Continue reading…
